Is It Safe to Have Anal Sex?

6 may 2026 The Joybloom Team

Dear The Joybloom:

I always see anal toys display in sex toy website and it's in popular category! Is it worth trying at least once in my life? I really want to know! Also, could anyone share a detailed guide on how to prepare for anal sex? Would be so appreciate!

Hey, anal explorer (so glad we will get another new anal member soon):

Let’s keep this real: if you’re thinking about trying anal for the first time, you minght be stressed about two things: messing up, and it may hurt. I am totally with you, and I’ve put together all the tips with 0 bullshits that I wish someone had given me before my first time! No judgment, just what actually works to keep it safe, comfortable, and have fun.

Preparation & Your Own Pace

First thing first: the prep everyone freaks out about, and it’s actually way more simpler than you thought. Gently wash the external area; deep internal cleaning is not necessary. The rectum is part of your digestive tract, so avoid deep or forceful cleaning. If you want to lower the chance of any awkward accidents, stick to a high-fiber diet in the days leading up to it which it keeps things regular, and makes cleanup a total breeze.

Next, slow the pace, let your body used to the feeling. Attention here: Before you start with a partner, take time to use your fingers or small, body-safe toys alone to get comfortable with the sensation, at your own pace. It’s about learning what it feels and how it feels good for you, so you’re not going in blind play, and it’ll cut down on so much potential discomfort issues later.

Lubrication Matters

Now, the non-negotiable rule I will scream is: LUBE. LOTS OF IT. No matter what you’re putting in there—fingers, toys, or anything—you cannot skip lubes. The right lube keeps things smooth and comfortable, lowers the risk of tiny tears that can lead to pain or infection, and let’s be honest: dry anal feels terrible for everyone. Grab a high-quality water-based lube (it’s body-safe and works with all toys), keep it close to you, and reapply often. No shame on it.

Comfort Without Performance Pressure

People respond differently, and orgasm is not guaranteed. There is no requirement to orgasm before trying anal sex.

Feeling relaxed can help with comfort, but it does not prevent injury. Stop if you feel pain.

Communication & Clear Boundaries

So what is most important thing of all? Communications. Talk to each other, and set hard boundaries before you guys start. I read so many crazy and horrible stories on here where people try anal, and their partner gets carried away—even when the receiver is saying it hurts, or needs to stop. I actually created my personal color system. My color code is: green, yellow, red, black.

Your partner better check in with you regularly, and use the colors to say exactly what you need:

  • Green = keep going, it feels amazing
  • Yellow = slow down, ease up a little
  • Red = stop right now, we need to take a break now
  • Black (or your own word) = we’re done fully

Choose a Toy With a Flared Base

One last non-negotiable rule I would say is, no exceptions: if you’re using a toy, it MUST have a flared base. I’m damn serious. Unless you want to be the person in the hospital emergency, awkwardly trying to explain to a doctor how you “slipped and fell” onto a toy that’s now stuck, don’t even think about using anything without a base...

A Few Health Reminders

Anal sex carries risks of injury and sexually transmitted infections. Condoms can lower STI risk, but they do not eliminate every risk. Use a lubricant compatible with both the condom and toy; oil-based lubricants can damage latex condoms. Check our lube compatibility guide.

Stop if there is pain or bleeding. Seek medical care for severe pain, heavy or persistent bleeding, or a retained toy. Do not keep trying to push through discomfort.

Clean toys according to their instructions. Trying anal sex is optional, and consent can be withdrawn at any time.

I hope all of this takes away some of the stress for you. Remember: there’s no rush, especially no “right” way to do such thing, and the only thing that matters is that you feel safe, comfortable, and respected the whole time. Have fun, be kind to yourself, and enjoy the pleasure!
